Dick entered the Academy with the background of a Rebel with a Yankee education. His most outstanding achievement, perhaps, lies in visiting the Gym voluntarily only once in four years and that was one day Plebe Summer when he was lost! Dick is an enthusiastic jitter-bug and always knows the latest song hits long before they are on the radio. Strange to say his favorite song is an old-timer, Two Loves Have I.
The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.
Loss
Walter was lost when USS Atlanta (CL 51) was destroyed on November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The ship was scuttled following damage from Japanese torpedoes and gunfire from USS San Francisco (CA 38).

He has a memory marker in Pennsylvania.
USS Straub (DE 181) was named for Walter; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Straub, was the ship’s sponsor.
