HAROLD EDWARD FISHER

Coming from a year at Ohio State, Bud brought with him all the pep and drive that have since characterized him. Bud has done well at the Academy in more ways than one. For three winter seasons his diving performances have been watched by appreciative audiences. Again, his academic standing shows that he has succeeded in his aims for his number is stated in tens—not hundreds.

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss

Harold was lost when USS Juneau (CL 52) was sunk by a Japanese submarine on November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

From researcher Kathy Franz:

Harold was born in Rockford, Illinois. In 1940 when Harold was in the Naval Academy, his family lived in Columbus, Ohio.

Harold’s father was a Captain in the 25th Infantry in Nogales, Arizona in 1930. (He had passed away prior to the 1940 census). He was ordered to Ohio State University where the family settled in Columbus. Harold’s mother was Hazel, his sister Margaret was born in Iowa in 1919, he was born in Illinois in 1920, and the twins Charles and Betty Lou were born in the Philippine Islands in 1924. When in Nogales, Harold and his sister Betty attended a 5-year-olds party on the Santa Cruz River in 1929.

From the Arizona Daily Star on June 19, 1929:

One of the events marked the fifth birthday of Charles Ballou, son of Lieut. and Mrs. C. N. S. Ballou of Camp Stephen D. Little. Eight little friends assembled at a shaded spot along the banks of the Santa Cruz River for a picnic, late Monday afternoon. Wading and various games provided entertainment for the young guests. Following the sports a picnic supper was spread under the trees by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Donald Hardin.

The children present were: Jean Howard, Harold and Betty Fisher, Omar Shaw, Donald Hardin, Jr., Katherine George, and David and Billy Ballou.

Harold is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
