With his cheery smile, humorous outlook, and that big shock of red hair, Dick is a prominent member of any group. His remarkable ability to keep people awake when they most want to sleep will be a valuable addition to a mid-watch aboard any ship. “Rojo” believes in enough study to get good grades, enough sports to have useful recreation, and plenty of fun in everything.

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss

From The Berkshire Eagle of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on June 16, 1943:

Arrangements were made today for the burial in Arlington National Cemetery of Lt. (jg) Richard L. Barleon, U.S.N. son of Capt. John S. Barleon, chief of staff of the first naval district who drowned in San Francisco Harbor yesterday.

In line of duty.

Naval headquarters here announced that young Barleon was engaged in diving operations at a dry dock, but that he evidently used up oxygen faster than it was supplied to him. In addition to his parents, he is survived by an old brother, Lieut John S. Barleon Jr., and two sisters.

Other Information

Both his father and his older brother were Naval Academy graduates, Class of 1907 and Class of 1935, respectively. Richard is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
