JOHN WINSTON BOOKER

Book, Reveille

Cross Country 4, Manager; P. P.O.

Brown eyed “Reveille” from down Gulf of Mexico way—just Book. Give him a fish hook and a puddle to wet it in, then a dyed-in-the-wool sandblower is perfectly contented. Taking life with a grin, he rides the crests like an old salt. Modest restraint, a liberal philosophy, and a hard worker—that’s Johnny. Stringing along in his spare moments with those long, black cigars. A rich future, Book!

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss

John was lost when USS Grayling (SS 209) was sunk sometime between September 9-12, 1943.

Other Information

He was survived by his father, Winston Bryan Booker, mother, Mary Christine (McKay), and sister, Betty.

John is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
