William was lost when his A5A Vigilante crashed near NAS Patuxent River, MD, on March 17, 1961.

His plane pulled upward at a 45 degree angle reaching 3,000 feet before it plunged into 5 feet of water.
William attended Catawissa High School. In his junior year, he was sports co-editor for the yearbook, and he played soccer and baseball. He enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1942, at State College.
He was survived by his wife, Jane Preston, and three children. His father Marvin was a proprietor of a garage, mother Edith, brothers Harold and Donald, and aunt Bessie.
His wife later remarried.
He is buried in Pennsylvania.
