Oliver Thomas Johnson

Just ambling along, never taking a strain, that’s O. T. He was in the Naval R.O.T.C. for two years at Oklahoma University, where he became very much interested in the Navy and thus entered the Naval Academy. O. T. takes the academics in his stride; although he did have a few tough rounds with the Dago Department. He has a natural affinity for dragging and hasn’t done so bad for himself along that line. O.T. has a disposition that has won him many friends and we feel that these friendships will grow stronger with the passing of time.

The Class of 1946 was graduated in June 1945 due to World War II. The entirety of 2nd class (junior) year was removed from the curriculum.

Loss

He married Ruth J. Schermerhorn, August 30, 1946 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

He died in an military aircraft crash, 17 miles due east of Baffin Bay, Texas. His body not recovered at that time.

Oliver graduated from Okemah High School in 1940. His father Hugh, a jeweler, and mother Eunice, an optometrist, moved in 1945 to Albuquerque.

From the June-July 1949 issue of Shipmate:

OLIVER T. JOHNSON, (Lt. jg USN- Deceased). It is with deep regret that we record the death of Lt. Johnson who was killed in an air accident at Corpus Christi, Tex., on 17 March 1949. Memorial services were held on 19 March, 1949, at the air station. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Johnson, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Johnson of Miami, Okla.
