HARRY RUSSELL FLORY, JR.

The son of an international journalist, Harry spent much of his youth in France and England. Back in the U. S. he decided in ‘44 that the Navy was to be his future. After two years in bell bottoms, he entered the Naval Academy. An ardent sailor, Rusty could be found almost any fall or spring afternoon on the Chesapeake. His knowledge of professional happenings and developments showed him to be a man who was interested in what he could give to the Navy. This reversal of the usual attitude marks him as a man to be reckoned with.

Loss

Harry was lost on September 6, 1952 when the FG-LD Corsair he was piloting crashed north of San Rafael, California. He was a member of Fighter Squadron (VF) 94.

Other Information

From researcher Kathy Franz:

Harry traveled with his mother and sister several times to and from Europe. They listed their address as Sioux City, Iowa.

He enlisted in the New York National Guard, Co. K. 7th Regt. on November 24, 1943. He entered the US Armed Forces on July 10, 1944. He spent two years during World War II in the V-12 naval officers training program.

From the Ventura County Star-Free Press on September 8, 1952:

Flory, son of Harry R. Flory, United Press communications manager, was on a routine training flight.

He was stationed with squadron VF94 at the Alameda naval air station and had been transferred from Corpus Christi, Tex., a few weeks ago.…

Young Flory, a graduate of Phillips Exeter academy, the collegiate school in New York, and the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, is survived by his parents, a sister Marjorie Ann Flory, 22, and a brother, Stewart Gilman Flory, 10.

Harry is buried in Iowa. (Note Find A Grave has the incorrect birth year. National Guard enlistment card gives it as 1926, which also matches the newspaper report of his age of 26.)
