It is difficult to classify Chuck as a “yankee” or “reb” since he claims a town in North Carolina for his home and yet is a Bostonian of long standing. Quite steady with his academics, he pretends to be most fickle in matters of the heart, but now shows indications of settling down. Chuck has won the title of the “old Professor” from his loving classmates by dint of having pulled more of them sat than he can remember.

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss

Charles was lost when USS Juneau (CL 52) was sunk by a Japanese submarine on November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

Charles’ parents were born in Italy and arrived in the United States in 1914.

In 1920, Charles and his family lived in Fernandina Beach, Florida, where his father Joseph was a fisherman. His mother was Mary; sisters Bessie, Rosa and Jennette, and brother Paul.

In 1930, the family lived in Boston. His father was not listed, but Charles’ older brother Benedetta, who was born in Italy, was living with them.

The Latrobe Bulletin on January 14, 1943 reported that, while Charles had never been to Latrobe, he was supposed to have been in April 1942 to serve as best man in another officer’s wedding. The story reported he was survived by his parents, who lived in Boston.

He is listed at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
