ALFRED EDGAR SENIOR, JR.

Al’s early years at Navy found him buffeted by the Academic Department; but with the help of a low clutch factor, he managed to defy the law of averages and steer clear of “Bilger’s Gate.” The time he saved on his studies was spent improving his social penmanship with the sweetest little gal in New Jersey on the other end of the correspondence. When not waiting for mail call, Al could usually be found down on the tennis courts where he displayed a smashing service and good energetic play. Photography and dragging comprised Al’s extracurricular activities, both of which he entered into with enthusiasm, trying hard to reach perfection in both.

He was also a member of the 8th Company staff (fall) Fall Leadership.

Loss

Alfred was lost on August 5, 1959 when the S2F Tracker he was aboard crashed into the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to land aboard USS Champlain (CV 39). He was the copilot. He was a member of Air Anti-Submarine Squadron (VS) 30, based at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia.

In July 1951, Alfred was voted the junior member for July of the Ocean City Rotary Club. In August, he gave a speech outlining his experiences at Boys’ State at Rutgers University in June.

In December, Alfred was appointed a Kiwanis representative to the service clubs council.

In April 1952, Alfred was sworn in as a recruit by the Naval Reserve at a Kiwanis Club luncheon.

He graduated from Ocean City High School. He gave a speech on “Better Citizens Through Better Schools.”

In September, he started classes in the naval training course at the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania.

He married the former Joan Elizabeth Barden of Oaklyn on June 29, 1957, in the Oaklyn Baptist Church.

Alfred was next stationed in Pensacola. He received his flying wings in October 1958.

In March 1959 Alfred graduated from the seven-week course at the School of Naval Justice, Naval Base Newport, Rhode Island.

His father was a well-known photographer. His sister was Mrs. Doris Marts whose husband was also stationed aboard the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain.

He has a memory marker in New Jersey.
