Dick was lost on November 12, 1973 when his A-7 Corsair II crashed while operating from USS Midway (CV 41) near Japan. He was survived by1 his widow, Hope Pierson, and their two children. (Information on children from April 1974 issue of Shipmate.)

His parents were Lloyd Wendell and Fay Mildred (nee Stephenson) Pierson. Richard was born in Koochiching County, Minnesota. He married Hope Johnson on June 21, 1965, in St. Louis.
