George — 10th Company

Coming to “Canoe U.” from Providence, Rhode Island, George proved to be one of the more colorful characters in the Tenth Company. George’s weight lifting feats gained him some degree of notoriety in the company, while his one disappointment at USNA was the fact that, after having played two years of amateur league hockey, the sport was not offered here. Second Class Summer (aviation phase) seems to have impressed him because his chosen field is that of Navy Air. Fear not, however, for this future von Richtoven will be on our side. His natural wit should combine with his knowledge of the air to bring forth one of our hottest Navy pilots.

Loss

George was lost on March 25, 1968 when the aircraft he was flying crashed near Plaster City, California.

Lt. George D. Theroux, USN, died 25 March near Plaster City, Calif., in an aircraft accident while on a routine training flight. He had been assigned to Aircraft Ferry Squadron 32, North Island. Memorial services were held in the Airman Memorial Chapel and at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Centerdale, R. I. Graveside services and interment were at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Annapolis, Md.

Lt. Theroux was born in Providence, R. I., and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1961. He received flight training at Pensacola, and was designated a naval aviator in October 1962. He served as a flight instructor with VT-3 at Whiting Field, Milton, Fla., aboard USS PROVIDENCE, and with Fighter Squadrons 101, 41, 121 and 161 before joining VRF-32 last February. He had completed one combat tour off Vietnam prior to his last assignment.

Surviving are his widow, the former Linda F. Robinson of Annapolis, and two daughters, Lisa and Michele, currently of 13953 Frame Road, Poway, Calif.; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis G. Theroux, 12 Adelaide Ave., Centerdale, R. I. 02911.

The crash was three miles of northeast of Plaster City, California. The other pilot aboard was also lost.

Memorial Hall Error

George is not listed with his classmates in Memorial Hall. This oversight was discovered while reviewing the June 1968 issue of Shipmate.
