Doug was lost1 when his F-4J crashed in the Atlantic Ocean on April 24, 1970. He was a member of Fighter Squadron (VF) 101. (Information from now-defunct website and confirmed by Class of 1965 President’s email on November 4, 2017.)

Lt. Douglas J. McCarty, USN, died 24 April at sea as a result of an aircraft accident while en route to NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. Memorial services were held in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at NAS Occana.
Lt. McCarty was raised in California. Prior to entering the Naval Academy he attended preparatory school at New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, N.M. He graduated from the Academy in the class of 1965.
After graduation he began flight training in Pensacola. He completed his training at Beeville, Tx., and was designated a Naval aviator in December 1966. His first flight assignment was Fighter Squadron 31; he deployed to the Mediterranean aboard the USS SARATOGA. In February 1970 he reported to Fighter Squadron 101, Detachment Oceana.
Lt. McCarty is survived by his widow, Barbara Gertrude, MOQ 666, NAS Oceana, Virginia Reach, Va. 23460; two daughters, Terri and Kym; his parents, Elder and Mrs. Frank E. McCarty of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers; and two sisters.
He graduated from Fresno High School in 1960.
Doug has a memory marker in Arlington National Cemetery. Barbara passed away in 2007.
