STRUDWICK TUTWILER PENNINGTON

Strud, Tut, Penny

Battalion Swimming; Boat Club 4, 3, 2, 1; P.P.O.

If he doubles you, you can’t win, and if he bids “Four spades,” he’s sure to make it. Right! He’s a card shark, and besides teaching his roommate bridge, he spent many hours dragging him through math and juice courses. At the same time he forgot his own academic talents in favor of magazines and records that were worn thin years ago. All told, he’s a line guy to have around.

The Class of 1942 graduated on December 19, 1941, less than two weeks after the United States entered World War II. The class had previously been scheduled to graduate in February 1942.

Loss

Strud was lost when USS Sims (DD 409) was sunk by Japanese dive bombers on May 7, 1942 in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Other Information

From researcher Kathy Franz:

In November 1936, Strudwick was an advertising representative for the new four-page tabloid newspaper, The Campus Reflector, at Walker County High School in Jasper. This was the first school paper published by the local student body in several years. After graduation, he attended Marion Military Institute where he was on the Dean’s List several times.

His father was an attorney.

He has a memorial marker in Arlington National Cemetery. His father was listed as next of kin.
