Francis was killed in action with Japanese forces on March 22, 1945 when his PB4Y-2 Privateer patrol bomber was shot down over Xiamen, China.

From the summary of the March 1945 War Diary entry of Patrol Bombing Squadron (VPB) 119 via Find A Grave:
Ensign Francis [Whittie] Greene was a Co-Pilot on a US Navy PB4Y-2 ‘Privateer’ squadron VPB-119 when his plane was shot down over Amoy Harbor [now Xiamen], China on 22 March 1945. Greene and 5 other crew were lost.

In 1940 “Frank” lived with his mom Winifred who was divorced and his brother Robert, 16, and Winifred, age 11.
Frank was survived by his widow, Ellie S. Greene; his daughter, Frances W. Greene, was born in April, 1945, shortly after his loss. He has a memory marker in Hawaii that gives his home state as Virginia.
Francis is one of 36 members of the Class of 1946 on Virtual Memorial Hall.
