Ron was lost when his ES-2D Tracker crashed on May 30, 1980, off Pt. Mugu in California. One other person aboard was killed; two survived. “He continued to fly his aircraft while the rest of his crew bailed out. He went down with the aircraft, and his body was not recovered.”

Ronald was an honor student at Bend Senior High School. Interested in flying, he joined the Civil Air Patrol and obtained his private license as a pilot the summer of 1957.
He received an appointment to West Point by Senator Wayne Morse in January 1958. He also applied to the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. The next month, Congressman Al Ullman nominated him for appointment to the Naval Academy.
As a third class midshipman, he was aboard the destroyer USS Haynsworth participating in the Navy’s Operation Inland Seas which included a visit to the Great Lakes. (see photo)
In January 1963 he received training in jet aircraft flying at NAS Meridian, Mississippi. In July he completed the basic jet training course at Forrest Sherman Field in Pensacola and then went to advanced training at Corpus Christi.
Parents were Olaf, a moulder feeder in the Oregon Woodwork company, and Helen. His father was born in Canada and had worked as a lumberjack.
